This view is taken from the same monumental work of Victorian Orientalism,
The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, & Nubia
(published in London between 1842 and 1849). David Roberts was particularly keen to restore the grandeur of the temple of Luxor, erected in the heart of ancient Thebes.
The composition masterfully illustrates the entrance or one of the porticos of the temple, whose monumental papyriform columns rise above the sand, partially silted as they were at the time of the artist’s trip in 1838-1839. The lithographic work of Louis Haghe excels in conveying the contrasts of light as well as the details of Pharaonic architecture, while the animated figures in the foreground recall local life in 19th century Egypt in the face of the eternity of its remains.
Our work is in line with the great archeology and travel plates of the 19th century, offering a striking and remarkably sensitive testimony to the ruins of Upper Egypt.
