RUSSIAN SCHOOL, Vetka (19th century)
Icon depicting Saint Nicholas of Myra flanked by Saints Boris and Gleb and patron saints.
Tempera on a wooden panel with a gold background.
Height: 31 cm Length: 26 cm
In good overall condition.
Originating from the Vetka iconographic centre, a major centre of devotion for the Old Believers, this icon is distinguished by its rich, hierarchically structured composition. The upper register features a bust of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, flanked by the holy martyr princes Boris and Gleb. The lower register features a row of patron saints and guardian angels, commissioned for a family’s personal devotional purposes. The border is decorated with a chiselled foliage scroll motif typical of Vetka’s work, which seeks to imitate goldsmith’s craftsmanship.
