The upper spatula consists of a blown and polished celestial blue opaline blade with a rounded tip. It is inserted into a gilded and enameled bronze handle, with cut sides and a pointed heel. The handle is entirely covered on each side with a sumptuous decoration of polychrome enamels in light relief and gold scrolls, depicting foliage, stylized flowers and acanthus scrolls on a matching royal blue background. A chiseled gilded bronze ring makes the transition between the handle and the blade.

The turquoise blue color of the opaline, particularly difficult to master technically at this early period, matches magnificently with the gilded and enameled bronze frame. These very luxury objects, often sold by the famous tablet makers and mercers installed under the arcades of the Palais-Royal in Paris, were gifts of choice for the nobility. Finding a piece from this period with its original opaline blade intact is extremely rare on the market today.
