In the 19th century, Bohemian glassworks excelled in the creation of high-quality colored glass toilet and living room objects, exported throughout Europe and particularly popular in France during the Second Empire. The technique of optically ribbed blown glass (creating these interior undulations which play with the light) is magnified here by highly precise fine gold enamelling work. The chosen ornamental repertoire, mixing naturalism and classical scrollwork, is characteristic of the decorative eclecticism of the Napoleon III era. This type of precious box found its place on women’s dressing tables or as a display piece to hold sweets or powder.
Our object is in line with prestige bottles and toiletry accessories in Bohemian glass, offering a very fine example of the refined combination of tinted glass and hot gilding
