The series of figures ‘Peoples of Russia’ was produced at the Gardner factory from the 1870s and included about 50 figures. They were made from colour lithographs of the book ‘Ethnographic Description of the Peoples of Russia’ written by T. de Pauli in French. These statuettes were a kind of plastic variations of the graphic originals.
The ‘Peoples of Russia’ series covers a diversity of peoples, including both traditional ethnic groups and representatives of various social classes. Each figurine was meticulously worked out, taking into account national costumes and attributes. The statuettes served not only as decorative elements, but also as educational models, demonstrating the cultural diversity of the Russian Empire. The ‘Peoples of Russia’ series remains a significant part of Russian museum collections and continues to attract the attention of collectors and art lovers alike.
