#5 Ahmed III (December 30, 1673 – July 1, 1736) was a Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and son of Sultan Mehmed IV (r. 1648–1687). His mother was Gülnuş Sultan, originally from Greece, born Evmania Voria.He was born in Hacıoğlu Pazarcık, in Dobruja. He succeeded to the throne in 1703 after the abdication of his brother Mustafa II (1695–1703).Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha and the sultan’s daughter, Fatma Sultan (wife of the former), led the government from 1718 to 1730, a period known as the “Tulip Period”.
Early in the reign of Ahmed III, significant efforts were made to appease the Janissaries. However, Ahmed failed to prevail against the janissaries who had brought him to power. The grand vizier Çorlulu Ali Pasha, appointed by Ahmed, provided him with valuable assistance in administrative matters and put in place new measures to replenish the state coffers. He supported Ahmed in his struggles against rival factions and stabilized the government. Ahmed was an avid reader, gifted in calligraphy and versed in history and poetry.
