#4 Ibrahim I (October 13, 1617

August 18, 1648) was Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1640 to 1648.
The fourth piece in this same series of imperial portraits in oval medallions, this work represents Sultan Ibrahim I (1615-1648), known as “Ibrahim the Mad”, who reigned over the Ottoman Empire from 1640 to 1648. The sovereign is represented in bust, wearing a large white turban surrounded by a blue headband, crowned with an imposing black and white fan plume. by a goldsmith’s medallion. He is dressed in a rich green ceremonial caftan decorated with gold thread frogs and lined with an opulent ermine fur border, revealing orange and gold brocade sleeves.
This iconography rigorously follows the aesthetic codes established during the reign of Selim III to standardize the official imagery of the dynasts of the Sublime Porte, combining the art of local miniatures with the layout of collections of Western ceremonial engravings.
Our work is in line with the art of Ottoman imperial portraiture of the 19th century, forming a coherent and inseparable historical whole with the previous portraits of Sultans Bayezid and Selim III.
